WordPress Care Plans

Why would I even NEED a Care Plan?

Let me share an apocryphal story with you – one that mirrors events that actually happen every day to thousands of businesses.

Bob’s Best Intentions

Bob has a bespoke furniture business with an E-Commerce website. Through this site he sells his furniture to customers country-wide – and for some pieces, globally.

When Bob’s website project was initially proposed by his web agency, they also offered to assist him with website security and keeping the website maintained.

Bob declined this offer as at the time he felt that he wanted to look after everything by himself.

Unfortunately for Bob he just didn’t realise how much time it can actually take to keep up with the important maintenance tasks that he needed to do, as well as run his business.

He had the very best of intentions when he first said that he’d take responsibility for looking after his own website – but it was not long at all before the realities of time limitations and business priorities got the better of him – over and over and over again!!!!!

Bob’s Rude Awakening

Eventually, after more than a year without essential maintenance, a malicious hacker found a security flaw in one of Bob’s plugins. The flaw itself had been found and patched months previously by the developer of the particular plugin. But Bob had not updated his core files; his theme files; and his plugin files.

The continuing existence on Bob’s site of this superseded, flawed version of the plugin allowed the attacker to gain full entry to Bob’s website and to steal data from his customers.

Bob was extremely lucky that he didn’t store credit card numbers (he used a reputable payment processor), but it was a serious data breach and over 1,000 customers were affected.

All of this happened purely because Bob hadn’t actually taken the necessary steps to look after and maintain his website.

Bob Facing the Consequences

Just repairing the damage to the website on its own cost Bob more than £3,000. OUCH!

Additionally Bob had to inform his insurance company of the issue and his liability for it, as well as apologise to every customer whose data was lost. OUCH!!

The incident had to be reported by law to the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) and Bob is still sweating on their judgement. His business could potentially be fined as much as £17.5M or 4% of his global turnover, whichever is the greater!!! OUCH!!!

Because of the potential criminality on the part of the hacker, Bob (and his web agency) also spent countless hours of valuable time having to liaise with the police and Data Protection authorities. OUCH!!!!

Bob’s Happy Ending

Thankfully Bob is still in business today, but he is a whole lot more careful with his website and has invested in the protection offered by a Website Care Plan appropriate to his business needs.

It doesn’t take a great deal of time to look after a website, but it is absolutely imperative that this maintenance time is actioned religiously.

Your website is an asset. It requires maintenance just as much as your car, your business premises or your home do.

If you ignore care and maintenance – like Bob let happen to him – all of these will eventually break down bringing you expensive, avoidable problems.
